This is the Ascent of Man: This means spreading a understanding and an appreciation of science, as his programs tries to do. Intended as a series of “personal view” documentaries in the manner bronowzki Kenneth Clark ‘s series Civilisationthe series received acclaim for Bronowski’s highly informed but eloquently simple analysis, his long, elegant monologues and its extensive location shoots. He first became familiar to the British public through appearances on the BBC television version of The Brains Trust in the late s.

The reason why I’m reviewing it is because there are numerous errors in the first chapter that make this a problematic read. The bronowdki series was shot on 16 mm film. It sets out to give an overview of the whole of human history, briefly going over our biological evolution, and then covering in some detail our cultural ascemt.

Aside from that, this volume provides an excellent history of the development of intellectual progress that led to man being what he is today. The additional puzzle is that he can express them so flawlessly in a language that, until he was 12, he had never heard.

Nov 05, Tony rated it really liked it Shelves: All our science, all our endeavour, is for something. It does a good job of telling the story of how we got here, but doesn’t really want to address the “why” question, despite exuding a boundless optimism that the direction we’re going is “right”.

Some of the fluency stems from Bronowski’s greedy enthusiasm for intellectual adventure, including poetry I still have his book William Blake and the Age of Revolution, and felicitously, a new scholarly monograph from Imprint Academic, The Happy Passion by Antony James, tells us a lot more about Bronowski’s output. As he explains, both the portrait and these readings are interpretations of their subjects.


Some of the fluency stems from Bronowski’s decision to put as much of the script for the TV series into the book as possible. Jacob Bronowski was a British mathematician, biologist, poet and playwright. I immediately went out and bought the companion book to the series and read it straight through. A History of Britain — In this program, his topic is the history of science.

This same attitude helps him demonstrate that the hit-and-miss handiwork of the Bronze Age, the intricate craftsmanship of Samurai swordsmiths, and the not-quite-futile endeavours of the medieval alchemists, were all tentative explorations of the invisible nature of matter.

It is just the way my thinking works, I guess I’m not that “quick”. Perhaps this style of writing is a result of the book being modeled on the spoken transcript of the televison show.

He also had a gift for sentences brpnowski with precision, and Dawkins picks out two of them in his foreword: It was a pleasure to re-read this book again.
