In this antic yet poignant new novel, Jack Gantos has perfect pitch in capturing the humor, the off-the-wall intensity, and the serious challenges that life hte to a kid dealing with hyper-activity and related disorders.
And given that medicating children with this syndrome is controversial, some readers may be bothered that the solution is almost entirely a matter of giving Joey the right medication. I loved this book. Special education in schools is very different from how it was presented. In the story, if Joey didn’t behave, he will be sent to the spec ed class.
If he doesn’t get to do small things wrong, his ADHD builds up and he does big things wrong. After reading the swalloowed on the back cover, I had some concerns so I read the rest of the book and I am appalled.
She makes up rules and actually begins to act as a parent.

As soon as you see the tail your mind wanders all over the place and you think of a million other animals that also have tails until you don’t care about the elephant because it’s only one thing when you’ve been thinking about a million others. He has a habit of swallowing a key attached to a piece of string in order to pull it back out again, and on one instance he forgets to attach a string to the key, preventing him from pulling it back up.

As a special educator, I was extremely disappointed with the references to special education in this stor I found this book on a list of books for children with ADHD. Overall, it’s an interesting and fast read.
Is it that we only really see part of him? My daughter who is 13 chose not to read it. Joey’s mom finally sobers up enough although doesn’t stop drinking completely to come back for Joey and care for him. They are not weird and different as depicted in this book. An abusive relative, out-of-control school behavior, his mom’s struggles–all unwind in a non-stop fashion that makes us realize how a child copes with issues like these–by just bouncing on, around, through or over them, on and on.

The author did his job in creating a memorable character and a well-imagined world to put him in; the issue is it becomes what many assume must be reality. Will he ever get anything right?
